Do I need an Apple Music subscription?

No. Playback works with any music added to your Apple Music library, either through an Apple Music subscription or imported from elsewhere.

Does Playback collect any of my data?

No. There are no accounts, no servers, and no analytics. Your library stays on your device, between you and Apple Music. See the Privacy Policy for the full details.

How does Playback choose what to play?

In Songs, Playback draws an endless rotation from your own library. A bespoke algorithm blends genre lineage, tempo, and sonic similarity, prioritising the songs you’ve played most and those that have been in your library longest. The result is a queue that feels curated from music you already care about.

Can I get back to a queue I loved?

Yes. Every played queue is saved to Playback’s History, so you can revisit a session and save it as a playlist in Apple Music.

How do the random playlists work?

Playlists spins a dial through your Apple Music playlists and lands on one at random — your collection reshuffled, with none of the deciding.

What is Design mode?

Design lets you build a playlist by drawing its shape. Sketch an energy curve — from glacial calm up to full intensity — and Playback fills it with songs that rise and fall to match your mood.

Why does Playback ask for access to my music?

Playback reads your Apple Music library on your device to build queues from the songs and playlists you already have. It needs the Media & Apple Music permission to do this. Grant it under Settings → Playback → Media & Apple Music, or when the app first asks.

Can I control Playback with Siri?

Yes. Ask Siri to make a playlist, design one by mood, play something at random, or save what’s playing to your library. You can also add a Control Center button to start the music without unlocking your phone. It all runs on Shortcuts, so you can wire Playback into routines of your own.
